Optimization vs. manipulation: Where do we draw the line?
There is a growing blurry boundary between what we currently call an act of optimization (e.g. picking the right keywords for our website, choosing images that engender engagement) and what may be manipulative (e.g. purchasing fake followers for social profiles, choosing misleading headlines). While the outcomes of these actions may result in heightened growth and have a truly positive business impact, how do we think about where to draw the line? What should not be acceptable?
