Cybermonitors - Using big data to fight crime
The use of big data and data science enables the police to work more efficiently, by developing tools that allow us to quickly make informed decisions. Such tools can be of benefit to both civilians as well as corporations, as reducing crime or knowing how respond to crises impact both groups. In making these tools we strive to base recommendations on facts rather than assumptions, and work with real time data and trends such that we can also use these from short to long term planning. One example that is currently being developed is the cybermonitor for the Rotterdam harbour. By monitoring news around the globe, analysts can gain insight into the current global state of cybersecurity, and also anticipate on cybersecurity threats. Consequently measures can be taken in collaboration with partners to prevent for example fraud, theft, or infrastructure fallouts. For more information see https://ferm-rotterdam.nl and https://www.resilientrotterdam.nl/en/ In this session we would like to have a roundtable discussion on how the use of big data and data science can lead to new insights, and help the police reduce crime and improve security. Assisted by Joeri Peters and Jelte Mense, data scientists at the Police.
